Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often about moving to the Isle of Man, tax, property, and how Move2IOM can help. Can’t find what you’re after? Book a free call and ask us directly.
Moving & Visas
Do I need a visa to move to the Isle of Man?
It depends on your nationality. UK and Irish citizens can live and work on the Isle of Man freely. Other nationalities may need a visa or work permit, similar to moving to the UK. We can help you work out what applies to your situation as part of our immigration processing service.
How long does the moving process typically take?
Most people take three to six months from deciding to move to actually relocating, though it can be faster. Timelines depend on your visa route (if needed), selling or renting out a property, and finding somewhere to live on the Island. See our step-by-step moving guide for a stage-by-stage plan.
Can I work remotely from the Isle of Man for a UK employer?
Many people do. You’ll typically become tax resident on the Isle of Man rather than the UK once you’ve moved, which has implications for how your income is taxed and for your employer’s payroll obligations. It’s worth getting this structured properly before you move — book a free call and we’ll talk it through.
Do I need a job offer before I can move?
Not necessarily. UK and Irish citizens don’t need one. If you do need a visa, some routes require a job offer from an Isle of Man employer while others (such as certain investment or high net worth routes) don’t. We can help you identify the right route for you.
Tax & Money
What is the income tax rate on the Isle of Man?
The Isle of Man has a standard rate of 10% and a higher rate of 21%, with a personal allowance before you pay any tax at all. There’s also an elective annual tax cap for high earners. Rates are generally lower than the UK across most income levels — use our UK vs Isle of Man Tax Calculator to see the numbers for your own salary.
Do I still need to pay UK tax if I move to the Isle of Man?
Once you become non-UK resident and Isle of Man resident, you generally stop paying UK income tax on your earnings, though UK-source income (like rental income from a UK property) may still be taxable there. Residency rules are detailed and depend on your circumstances — this is exactly the kind of thing worth getting proper advice on before you move.
Is there a cap on how much income tax I pay?
Yes. The Isle of Man offers an elective tax cap, meaning high earners can apply to cap their total annual income tax liability rather than paying the standard rates on everything above the threshold. It’s optional and needs to be elected — we can advise whether it makes sense for you.
Do I need to change my banking when I move?
You don’t have to close your UK accounts, but most people open a local Isle of Man bank account for day-to-day living, salary payments, and mortgages if buying property. We help clients navigate account opening as part of our relocation logistics service.
Property & Living
How much does it cost to buy or rent a home on the Isle of Man?
It varies a lot by area — median prices range from under £180,000 in some villages to well over £450,000 in sought-after spots. Our interactive “Where to Live on the Isle of Man” map lets you filter by budget and see real transaction data for every town and village on the Island.
What’s the best area to live on the Isle of Man?
It depends what you’re after — Douglas and the surrounding areas suit people who want to be close to work and amenities, while villages further out offer more space and lower prices with a longer commute. Explore the map to compare areas, or message us on WhatsApp and tell us what matters to you.
What is the cost of living like compared to the UK?
Some costs (like fuel and certain goods, due to shipping) tend to run a little higher, while others — particularly tax on income — are typically lower. For most people who move for tax efficiency, the overall financial picture works out favourably once you account for take-home pay. Our tax calculator is a good starting point for the income side of that comparison.
